The banded mongoose, also known as the zebra mongoose, is easily recognizable by its thick, striped brownish-gray fur and pink nose. Groups of 15 to 40 individuals live in termite mounds with hollowed-out chambers. They flee there as soon as lookouts sound an alarm to warn their foraging companions of danger. Their diet is varied; they kill and eat any animal they can catch. This mongoose species is well-adapted to sandy areas and can close its ears and nose to protect against the sand.
