The great white pelican of the pink-backed pelican takes on a pinkish hue during the breeding season. The tips of its wings are black, there is a yellowish patch on its throat, its throat pouch is yellow, its eyes are red, and its legs are reddish in color and webbed. Young pelicans turn white by the age of 3–4 years; until then, they are brownish in color. Their tail feathers are short, and their wings are rounded and broad. The pink-backed pelican is a social bird; its flocks can be seen flying in a V-formation or in a diagonal line over the water. Its main food source is fish, which it catches in marshes, river mouths, shallow brackish water, and freshwater lakes. It can consume up to two kilograms of fish per day.
