A slender bird that lives along coastlines and near shallow lakes. It particularly favors salty and brackish lakes rich in plant and animal plankton, which provide an abundant food supply. With their heads lowered, they wade slowly through the shallow water in search of food. They pump water into their beaks and then filter out the tiny crustaceans, insects, and algae among their comb-like gills. When they exhaust the food supply in their territory, they search for a new location in flocks, often traveling great distances. They breed in large colonies in muddy, shallow areas and along the shores of salt lakes.
