The hamadryas baboon gets its name from a cape-like "collar" of silver-gray fur, which is found exclusively on adult, sexually mature males. It is primarily a ground-dwelling species, as there are relatively few large trees in its range. It typically lives in troops of about 60 individuals, which include several sexually mature males, each of whom usually has his own harem. The strongest, dominant male of the group (commonly called the "basa") maintains the largest harem. Females signal their receptivity through a bright red swelling on their clitoris, which makes it easier for the male to guard them during the critical period.
