Eight Bears, Hundreds of LEGO Bricks, and an Opportunity to Make a Difference
Visitors to Sóstó Zoo may simply see eight remarkable LEGO bear sculptures. Behind them, however, lies a much deeper story—one of disadvantaged young people, dedicated educators, the LEGO factory in Nyíregyháza, and a unique community partnership.
For years, the Tekerd! group, based at the Wesselényi Miklós Technical School in Nyíregyháza, has demonstrated how creativity and collaborative work can provide new opportunities and meaningful achievements for young people facing social challenges.
Their latest project resulted in eight LEGO sculptures representing eight different bear species found around the world. The initiative combined the support of the LEGO factory in Nyíregyháza, the professional expertise of Sóstó Zoo, and the commitment and talent of the Tekerd! team.
The project was created in connection with the EAZA Bear TAG Happy Bears Day event. Its aim was to introduce visitors to the diversity of the world's bear species through an engaging and visually appealing experience, while involving young creators in a meaningful conservation-focused community project.
Creating the bears involved much more than building with LEGO bricks. Based on designs by Péter Szalay, members of the Tekerd! group carefully assembled the sculptures from hundreds of LEGO bricks. Under the guidance and coordination of educator Zsolt Hudák, the participants worked together to transform the designs into impressive exhibits while developing teamwork, precision and practical skills throughout the creative process.
One of the project's strongest messages is that creating value is a shared effort. It brought together a globally recognised company’s local factory, one of Hungary's leading zoological parks, and a community supporting disadvantaged young people. The completed sculptures are not only eye-catching exhibits but also powerful examples of what can be achieved through trust, support and cooperation.
The eight LEGO bears represent more than wildlife conservation. They also highlight the power of community engagement, education and social responsibility. Together, they tell a story of creativity, inclusion and the positive impact of working toward a common goal.
The project continues the successful partnership between Sóstó Zoo and the LEGO factory in Nyíregyháza. Following the installation of a life-size LEGO polar bear in 2025, designed and built by professional LEGO builder Balázs Dóczy, visitors can now discover eight additional LEGO bear sculptures representing bear species from around the world. The sculptures assembled by the Tekerd! group further demonstrate how creativity, education and community engagement can come together to support both conservation awareness and social inclusion.
