A predator found primarily in aquatic habitats, as its scientific name suggests; the ancient Greek word "pelagos" means "open sea."
Although its wingspan is smaller than that of the heron and the monkey-eating eagle, it is the heaviest eagle in the world. The parent pair brings plenty of food—mainly fish and small waterbirds—to the chicks. They also prey on small mammals and consume carcasses washed up on the shore. Rarely, they even catch young chicks or even foxes.
