The largest primate alive today. It spends most of its day foraging, eating mainly fruit. It wanders one or two kilometers a day in search of food and spends the nights in a nest made of twigs and leaves. It lives in small family groups led and protected by an older, dominant male with a silvery back. The male gorilla attracts the attention of females by mimicking eating, making loud hooting sounds, and beating his chest. Females give birth to 1–2 offspring, which may nurse until the age of 4 and reach sexual maturity at 7 years of age.
